community kirtan

Rooted in the devotional practice of Bhakti yoga, Kirtan is a form of call-and-response chanting that uses the voice as a tool for connection, expression, and invoking divine energies. The Sanskrit chants are simple, repetitive, and meant to be accessible to everyone. They call on different deities and their energetic qualities, offering a way to connect with something beyond the everyday and to feel that connection in community.

Sessions open with a cup of tea and a gentle warm-up song in English to help unify our breath and voice. Each chant is introduced with it’s meaning, including who or what we’re singing to and how that energy might relate to life today. From there, we move through a series of chants, slowly building energy together before ending at a peak. Instruments like guitar, drums, and flute help hold the rhythm and spirit of the session, creating a space for both peaceful reflection and joyful expression.

Swell’s Community Kirtan isn’t a performance, all levels of experience and curiosity are welcome. We encourage singing, humming, whispering, and even just listening. Come for the music, the meaning, or simply to feel the joy of community.

We are delighted to host this event as a donation-based offering to our community. Donations can be made via cash or Venmo @swellyogastudio (suggested: $20). Please note, advance registration is required.
